Major Bickford is orginally from Napa, California and moved to Northeast Tennessee in 2004 while serving on active duty in the United States Marine Corps.  He initally enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school.  After recruit training  in San Diego and initial infantry training in California, he served in Adak , AK; Pearl Harbor, HI; Kanehoe, HI; Okinawa, Japan; the Phillipine Islands; Mt Fuji, Japan, and Hong Kong before being selected to attend college and accept a commission as an officer. 

Major Bickford attended the Citadel in Charleston, SC as an active duty Marine Corps sergeant and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1995 upon his graduation with a Bachelor Arts degree in History with a minor in Third World Studies.  He served in command assignments as an infantry officer at the platoon and company level and staff assignments company, battalion, regimental, and headquarters Marine Corps levels.  He has been stationed in Camp Lejeune, NC; Quantico, VA; Okinawa, Japan; Pohang, Korea; aboard the USS Iwo Jima; and in Fallujah, Iraq.

Major Bickford completed a Masters of Education prior to his retirement after 20 years in 2008.  He began his employment with Hawkins County Schools as the Senior Naval Science Instructor at Volunteer High School in 2011.

Major Bickford is married to the former Jill Muir and has four adult children, Patrick, Nicholas, Gabrielle, and Zachary.
