school attendance update

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We want to clarify Hawkins County’s policy, especially following one TN school system’s decision to not accept doctor’s notes. We will accept doctor’s notes following the procedures below:

After a student accumulates 10 excused absences with a doctor's note, we will now be requesting the completion of either an Individual Health Plan (IHP) or a Chronic Condition Verification Form.

The core reason for this adjustment is to proactively partner with you in safeguarding your child's health. By requesting an IHP or Chronic Condition Verification Form for those more frequent medical absences, we can:

·             Gain a clearer understanding of your child's specific health concerns: This allows our school nurses and staff to be better prepared to provide appropriate care and support during the school day.

·             Develop tailored support plans: For students with chronic conditions or ongoing health needs, an IHP helps us create a customized plan to manage their health at school, ensuring their safety and academic success.

·             Facilitate timely communication: Having this information readily available allows for more efficient and effective communication between school staff and parents regarding a student's health.

·             Ensure student safety and well-being: With a comprehensive understanding of health needs, we can respond more effectively to emergencies and provide the necessary accommodations for a comfortable and productive learning environment.

Our ultimate goal is to ensure every student feels supported and safe, allowing them to thrive academically and personally. This policy change is a proactive step in building stronger partnerships with our families and providing the best possible environment for our students.

We look forward to continuing to work together to support your child's health and educational journey.
